1. What is the idea?

Basically, the main idea is to sell words and write the largest authored story in history……… simple. People buy words which I will host on my website. The words written by any given purchaser will be easy to differentiate by color blocks, and can also provide a direct link that author’s website of choice. The words will also contribute to a constantly evolving story, not to mention a one-off fingerprint of color signifying the way this story has evolved. This will most likely become the largest authored story in history, and anyone can participate and influence the storyline.

As well as providing “word-buyers” a form of advertising and a chance to help mold these historic novels, there is also a potential investment on offer. It is feasible that the 2 stories to come out of this website will be published on paper and sold as books. In this event, each person who has contributed to the story will receive royalties from the book sales. This royalty will be directly proportional to the “word-buyers” contribution to the total story (e.g. if somebody buys half the words to the million word story, and it makes $2 million in book sales, they get half of that in royalties).

There are 2 stories which I am selling words to. One story has 1 million words in it, with each word costing $1. The other story has 1 million characters in it, each character costs $1. The site offers “word-buyers” a totally unique way to advertise, as well as being a fairly creative exercise.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Creative freedom is definitely encouraged, and there is almost total freedom of expression. This includes allowing totally gratuitous acts of publicity such as the following passage. This passage shows 2 previous entries by “word-buyers” followed by the gratuitous one. However, there are a few rules and even gratuitous publicity presented in the stories needs to flow to fit into the story.

The ability of being able to advertise in such a way is one option to consider for “word buyers”, and will not be stopped. It is a total idiosyncrasy of the concept of this website. However, the more savvy author may use their words for more creative and striking effect. It must be remembered that this is an ongoing piece that people will READ, so it is potentially better to write interestingly. Please read the IMPORTANT NOTE below...it will help you get more clicks on your link

There are certain things which will not be allowed on this site:

1. Words must be the complete, non-abbreviated form unless appropriate in the context of the sentence (e.g. “w8 until L8r”, is not acceptable for “wait until later”).

2. Words must flow to make a sentence (e.g. you cannot just write “Gaming, Gaming, Gaming” unless it somehow fits into a sentence),

3. Sentences must flow from previous sentences, enough to allow the story to make sense when reading it (especially if there is a gratuitous direct reference to yourself),

4. Non appropriate use of vulgar language will not be allowed. Obviously there are times when this language is warranted (it is a story after all), however just writing “F_ _K, F_ _K, F_ _K, F_ _K” to get attention will not be allowed.

5. You cannot put your website address (or any website address) within the words you contribute to the story. I do not want these stories to become a diary of website addresses……..you do not need to write your web address in the story anyway as there will already be a direct link to your website!

Apart from those simple rules, the writing is up to the buyer of the words, allowing the formula of this concept to play itself out. If these rules are breached and are not rectified within 12 hours, the words will not be published on my site, that person will be placed at the end of the queue, and the next person in the “word-buyer” queue will be contacted

***VERY IMPORTANT...PLEASE READ*** This is my philosophy on how to make best use of your contribution. If you choose to blatantly advertise yourself in your words I think you are making a big mistake!!!. By doing this people will probably know before they click your link whether or not they actually want to follow it. Once this thing gets going, there will be many links…...and if you have written “look at the best gaming site”, or “eat more health food” most people will choose not to hit your link. I think if you want a lot of people to hit your link it is probably best to not give away too much about your site in what you write…...it is not needed as everything is already on your website, and that is where you really want people to go.

I really think the best idea is to try to get people interested in what has been written. I would personally do this by just trying to contribute to making the story more interesting: either writing very well (something that actually fits really well into the story), being amusing, being creative, being funny…...basically, if you write something that is clever and interesting, that is what will make people want to follow your link to see where it came from!

2. Who am I?

My name is Aditya Kesarcodi-Watson. I am a 29 year old Australian male currently living in New Zealand. I am a scientist by trade and am currently completing my PhD. After originally completing my Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture) in Australia in 1998, I quickly avoided anything to do with science and decided to travel. I then spent the next 4 years with stints in Asia, doing the great Ozzie past-time of returning behind bars in the UK, and working on ski fields in New Zealand and France.

As things turned out, whilst working a season atop The Remarkables ski field in New Zealand, I saw an advertisement for my current research project on the internet. Being in the same country, and considering a change of direction into something a little more solid than seasonal cooking and cleaning, I traveled to the interview once the ski season finished. The rest is history, and here I am now indeed into something more solid, if not stationary.

I am currently mid way through my PhD and am researching probiotic (good) bacteria as alternatives to antibiotic use in mussel production. Sounds interesting eh? Well it’s not too bad, and involves a lot of bacterial work, sleep deprivation as well as intermittent periods of heavy brain usage.

3. Where did the idea come from?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In January this year (2006) I saw a story on the news about a website created by an Englishman called Alex Tew. His site, TheMillionDollarHomepage.com, sold 1 million pixels from his website for $1 each. It was a great form of advertising for the pixel buyers as the site got huge worldwide interest and millions of visitors, whilst it was a money making venture for Alex. Alex ended up selling all his pixels and making $1 million in under 6 months……not a bad idea eh?

Well, when I saw this it made me totally re-think about what the internet was. I realized for the first time that the internet is a huge financial machine. Obviously, great and original concepts like Alex’s can potentially make money, but everyday there are massive amounts of money up for grabs on the internet for advertisers, companies and consumers alike. I guess this is a fairly simple concept for some people, but I also think that there are many people that don’t think about it at all (myself included). So with this reappraisal of the internet, I brainstormed for a way to get amongst it! I wanted something catchy, original and also something that offered a little more creativity for the participants than pixels. I came up with a range of ideas. Some are in the back of my mind currently, whilst others probably aren’t actually that great…..but that’s what brainstorming is right! I think this website is the best concept I came up with in terms of creativity.

When I first thought of this website in January I was like “I’ve got to do this ASAP. This concept is so simple, so easy to think up, that someone is going to do this any day soon if I don’t do it quickly”. I was hot on it for a week or so, but……………..as things go, I got sidetracked. I got totally tied up with writing a literature review for my PhD and also lab experiments. It is now 5 months on, and I’m finally getting back to it! Anyway, I really can’t believe that a search on the web for similar sites came up with nothing! All I can say is “great”……..I mean GREAT!!! It’s still an original concept.

4. Can I write whatever I want?

...But there was something wrong, something dark about the way in which the pigeon circled the letterbox. It was almost as if there was some outside force penetrating the avian mind.

Almost as if

It would be safe to assume that this sort of

thing was unusual, as historically pigeons displayed fairly passive behaviour towards metal objects housing

correspondence.

Without hesitation, the bird swooped and grasped the contents of the letterbox in it’s beak,

leaving behind only one flyer headed…… “if you look at my website you’ll find the best online gaming site”….

5. What do I get out of it?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Firstly, you get a form of advertising. Each contribution by a given person will be directly linked to the person’s own website if desired. In this way, there are probably 2 ways to stand out from the crowd:

1. buy more words thereby having a more recognizable section in the story,

2. write creatively, wittingly, humorously; something which will want the reader to see where it came from.

Secondly, you get to take part in this historic website, the first site to sell words! Who knows, the site may well become an icon of the web, another original idea that grabbed the internet. Even if you do not wish to buy words for advertising, you might like to write words to be part of this site. All contributor’s names will also be listed, even if not linking to a website.

Thirdly, you can potentially gain profit from the stories being published as books. This is not guaranteed, however things going well and the books getting published, people who have written words in each story will also hold a proportional stake in future royalties. I reckon this is a fairly interesting aspect. If these stories get completed, I will do everything in my power to get them published…..when I get on a project I always see it through to the end.

6. Do I need to have my own website to buy words?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

No. Anyone can buy words and become a part of this website. Obviously having a website allows those people a new avenue for advertising. However, you might just like to become a part of this, as well as gaining a share of potential royalties generated from future publishing of the stories. If you do not have your own website to link to, you might like to link to a website that interests you...maybe a specific cause. There has already been a link made to a Panda rescue organization and I think that’s a great cause. There is also a link to the FBI’s most wanted list (and I’m sure it didn’t come from the FBI!). So think what you want to promote, and you can link to that.

19. I'd like to contribute but I'm not very good at English or grammar

So Jeffery stopped thinking about the shopping vouchers and got back to the matter at hand.

you are a gust of wind” he said to himself.

As it turned out there was nothing that could be done now. If only they had remembered to fasten the last Velcro

7. Why do you have 2 different stories to buy words for? Which one should I choose to buy words in?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Initially the idea was to create just one story with 1 million words in it. However, I then realized that this story would be quite long. I then thought of the idea to have 1 million characters in the story, however this meant that contributors would have to pay more for each word/sentence/contribution. I decided to start 2 stories and offer the choice to people wanting to buy words/characters.

8. How long will I have to write and submit the words I want to buy?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

At the moment, the time you are allowed is negotiable.

Once you have decided to purchase words you need to email me. People will be placed in an order the same as they have emailed me. Once the person before you has decided on the words they want to buy and has paid for them, you will be contacted. You will be sent the latest stage of the story and can then begin to work on your contribution.

If this thing starts to get going at a fast pace, this condition might be changed in the future. Time limits could potentially be needed because if people start to apply for this website and a list of people gathers waiting to write their words, there will need to be some degree of forward movement.

Which story you should buy words/characters to depends on your preferences. In the 1 million word story, there is a minimum on 50 words per word buyer, while in the 1 million character story there is a minimum of 50 characters per buyer.

What this means is that there are 2 clear options to take:

1. enter the 1 Million Word Story ($1 per word) and get more value for money, i.e. the chance to write more for comparatively less money

2. enter the 1 Million Character Story ($1 per character) to not have to write as much. This story will be considerably shorter than the first, so could potentially get more viewers. I think this is an important point to remember when choosing which story to write in.

Below I have shown 2 examples. They can be used as a guide to see differences in the MINIMUM amount of words needed to submit to each story. Each different color block is a separate entry

Million word story:

First entry has 55 words ($55), second entry has 82 words ($82), third entry has 100 words ($100).

Million character story:

First entry has 76 characters ($76 dollars), second entry 54 characters ($54), third entry 65 characters ($65).

As you can see, you get much more writing ability for similar money in the first example, however some people may prefer to enter the second story (once finished the million word story will be in excess of 1500 pages- an epic!, while the million character story should be over 350 pages- more approachable). Obviously you can write as long as you want, and can write longer passages in the million character story, I have just shown these situations to give a feel for the amount of writing that is required as a minimum for each story.

9. How do I choose which color I want my text to be?

People who want to write words should do so in Microsoft Word. When you have chosen what you want to write, highlight the text. Under the “Format” menu at the top of MS Word, select “Borders and Shading”. A box will appear. Select the “Shading” tab, and then select which color you would like. When you have selected the color you want, your font will become enclosed in a box of color. Email this to me, and this is what will go onto my website. If you do not choose a color, I will do so myself.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10. How long will the site be online?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This site is definitely online for 5 years minimum. I have already paid for the website name for 5 years so this will not be changed. After this, I will assess exactly where the site is. If it is still chugging along nicely, then I will let the stories continue for “word buying”. If it is not selling any words, I may well finish with the idea. If the site is a huge success, all the words have been sold and it is advertising for lots of people (best scenario) it will obviously remain for longer than 5 years to continue giving those “word-buyers” advertising. It would be great if it became an iconic site on the net!

11. How is this an experiment in art, creativity and advertising?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It is an experiment, and an exciting one at that, because the outcome is totally unknown at this stage and could prove to be incredibly diverse.

No-one has ever sold words in this way, so it is a truly original form of advertising. The end product of literature as well as the conglomeration of color that will result should be a fairly unique display of merged minds and art.

Sounds a little strange, but I think it is a fairly exciting concept……..I think that the idea and it’s possibilities are pretty easy to visualize.

12. Do you think the end-product story will really be worth reading?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Although at this stage it is impossible to say what the quality of the story will be, I am hopeful that it will be good. The whole concept is to allow creativity from total strangers. The way that it will be produced will also be piece by piece, day by day, so although you might like to sit down and read it all at once, for more regular visitors it will be a little bit extra each day…..an ongoing drama! Anyway, the story in online, so you have a read and judge for yourself.

I would expect people to be creative in their words as it will potentially get them more interest from the public, however gratuitous forms of advertising, which may not fit into “blockbuster” reading are also great ways to advertise. It really is exciting to see how the stories unfold.

The vision that I have for the published book would actually facilitate the stories not being totally fluent like a regular novel. I think the published book could be a really huge seller.  I envisage it being a coffee–table style book. It would be large format, use good strong paper, and be color-printed to allow the same color-blocks for different authors (as shown on the website) to also be seen. It would be a kind of “show book” that you have lying around, could pick up any time and always find something interesting to look at. I think a colorful book written by many people with many words would have no limits to how many times you could pick it up and still find something different. I really think there is great potential for this story to become something eternal…….a colorful and trendy first to last forever.

13. How can you charge people for words?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I am charging people for the right to buy words that I will link and credit to them on my website. It is a novel concept, so we’ll see how it goes.

14. How can you make money publishing these stories as books in the future?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Publishing books in the future is hypothetical at this stage and remains determinant on the popularity of this website and the stories. This website and the content contained herein remain under copyright to myself once displayed here. People trying to reproduce this content will be dealt with accordingly. Under copyright laws, I will have the rights to publish this material.

15. Are you really going to offer money back to people who buy words from you?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Yes, 100%. If the stories get published as books in the future, all royalties will go to the people who have contributed. The amount of royalties each person gets will be directly based on the proportion of the story they have contributed. I will take nothing from the books royalties, unless people forfeit their rights (see terms and conditions)

16. Can I make a link on my own website to this website?

Yes, if you would like to link to me, please feel free

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

17. What will you do with the money?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is a hard one to say, as I cannot really fathom having $2 million, or even $1 million. It is hard to think seriously about what the money could be used for, when at the moment it is just an imaginary amount of money that I do not have. If things do start to look promising, I’m sure it will not take too long to make firmer plans.

I guess it is fair to say that things might take another huge change of direction for me. I have committed so long into my current research that it would be really nice to see it through and have a piece of work at the end of it, something I discovered! I would also like to create one particular website I have in mind, which would actually require money to consult a proper website designer.

However, after these things, there are a couple of indulgent things I have wanted to do for a while. I would love to go and live for a winter season in a European ski field, without having to actually work there to do so…….just go out riding each day! I have also wanted to teach English somewhere in Asia for a while now. This is something that I could always do regardless of being a millionaire, however, having the freedom to do indulge myself in some of my “wants” if I became a millionaire, I think the reality of this actually happening if far greater. Overall, I could definitely see myself enjoying the good life….that’s what being a millionaire is all about isn’t it! Well I guess for some people even one million dollars isn’t much, and they continually strive for more money………….I reckon I’d be pretty content with it.

I would have to say that I am absolutely, 100% unsure. I think it would be foolish to believe that this thing is going to be a hit, work at all, or even sell a few words, as it’s success is reliant on how well it is received by the internet community.

Optimistically, I would like to think that even if it doesn’t catch like wild-fire and make $2 million in 6 months, that it will still offer something to certain people and will continue like a slowly chugging steamboat. Obviously, $2 million over a 10 year period would still be a great achievement.

Having said that, strange things do happen on the internet, and being the brain of this concept I personally think it is a great idea. Together we are creating something everlasting in an experimental way, something artistic which will hopefully be enjoyable to read (and also look at with the fingerprint of color), something that can be used as a form of advertising to the millions of internet visitors, and also a potential investment to the “word-buyers”. So don’t be shy……buy some words!

18. Do you really think this will appeal to people?

19. I'd like to contribute but I'm not very good at English or grammar

No worries! All contributions have to go through me anyway, and I am very capable and likely to make minor editorial changes to facilitate each contribution being more grammatically correct and also fitting into the story well. Such corrections may be grammatical, correcting past– current-tense issues and spelling mistakes. Contributions will obviously remain true to each individual, however, I act as final editor to allow smoothness throughout the stories. If you would require my assistance in any aspect of your contribution, I am quite willing to work through it with you to make it more correct, readable and interesting.
